Why it matters
When something goes wrong, the audit log is the first artifact every investigator asks for. A data subject access request, a customer dispute, an agent suspected of misuse, a security incident, all start with "who saw what, when". A helpdesk without a comprehensive log is a helpdesk that cannot answer the question, which makes the incident response far harder.
Audit logs also gate compliance. SOC 2, ISO 27001, GDPR Article 30, and HIPAA all require records of access and change. Auditors will not accept "we trust our agents" as evidence; they will ask to see logs covering at least 12 months. Pricing tiers that limit log retention to 30 days are effectively excluding smaller teams from compliance frameworks they otherwise qualify for.
The third reason is operational. A new agent accidentally deletes a tag or merges two tickets that should have stayed separate. The log shows who did it, when, and what changed, so the team can reverse the action without firefighting in the dark. The log is as much a debugging aid as a compliance artefact.
